X Visas and Study Residence Permits: The Full Sequence from Admission to Registration
X1 is for long-term study and X2 for short-term study. After entering with an X1, students normally must follow their school's arrangements to register, complete accommodation registration and a medical examination, and obtain a study residence permit. The visa page's validity alone does not tell the whole story.
X1, X2, and the study residence permit
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa category guidance states that X1 is for long-term study in China and X2 for short-term study. X1 is normally the entry document for the long-term study route; after entering China, the holder must also apply for a study residence permit. X2 holders study for the period of stay shown on the visa page. After admission, ask the school to explain which visa category and subsequent procedures apply to you.
Course length and the school's admission category.
The admission documents and proof of study in China issued by the school.
The visa category, number of entries, and period of stay shown on the visa page.
Whether a residence permit is required after entry.
Registration and exit-entry arrangements in the school's city.
Prepare all original documents before departure
A valid passport and the issued X visa.
The formal admission notice and forms required for the study visa application.
Original academic qualifications, transcripts, language results, and other documents required by the school.
The medical examination form, imaging, laboratory results, or other materials required by the school.
A hotel booking, confirmation of campus housing, or an off-campus address.
Arrangements to pay tuition, insurance, and living expenses.
Contact details for the school's international student office and emergency telephone number.
Different consulates and schools may use electronic or paper admission and confirmation documents. Follow the instructions of the office handling the application and the school on what must be submitted for the visa and at entry. Your name in the passport must match the school's system and every admission document.
The first week after arrival
Complete accommodation registration promptly after checking into a hotel or residence.
Register with the school's international student office and present original documents for verification.
Complete the medical examination required by the school or have it reviewed by the designated institution.
Pay the required fees, purchase the prescribed insurance, and activate your campus identity.
Obtain the school's letter stating the study period and proof of enrollment.
Book an appointment with the public security exit-entry office as required by the city.
Submit the application for a study residence permit within 30 days of entry.
National Immigration Administration guidance requires anyone whose visa states that a residence permit must be obtained after entry to apply within 30 days of entry. Centralized processing by the school does not remove your responsibility to monitor the deadline. If your documents are still incomplete, explain the situation to the school and exit-entry authority as early as possible.
Documents for a study residence permit application
Standard documents include a valid passport, the Foreigner Visa and Permit Application Form, a photograph, and evidence relating to the purpose of residence. An applicant entering with an X1 and seeking a study residence permit normally submits a school letter stating the period of study and proof of admission or enrollment. An application for a residence permit of more than one year must also include a health certificate as required.
The school name, field of study, and study period are accurate.
The address in the accommodation registration matches your current actual residence.
Your name is consistent across the passport, visa, and school system.
The photograph, medical examination, and school letter remain valid.
Locally required copying, translation, and appointment procedures are complete.
Extensions, transfers, suspension, and withdrawal
If the study period is extended or you change schools or programs, have the school confirm your enrollment and issue the documents before applying to the exit-entry authority for an extension or change. A suspension, withdrawal, expulsion, or early graduation may terminate the original basis for residence, and the school will report it as required. Do not keep using a residence permit that has lost its study basis while waiting for the next step.
A replacement passport, a change of name or address, or a lost residence permit also requires prompt action. Before leaving China for any length of time, check the residence permit's validity, your eligibility to re-enter, and your registration status so that the document does not expire before you return to school.
After a residence application is accepted, the processing authority may retain your passport for a period. Keep the acceptance receipt and ask whether it can be used for accommodation, train travel, or other identity-based services. If you plan to travel to another city or leave China, confirm the document collection date, exit conditions, and documents needed to return with the school and processing office before submitting the application. Do not calculate the timeline from your flight date alone.
Student status does not automatically authorize work
A holder of a study residence permit who needs to undertake an off-campus internship or work-study placement must obtain consent letters from the school and host organization and apply to the public security exit-entry administration for an endorsement on the residence permit. Do not begin paid or actual off-campus work until the endorsement is complete.
Confirm with the school that the program permits the activity.
Have the host organization provide truthful details of the position and duration.
Obtain written consent from both parties.
Complete the endorsement procedure with the exit-entry authority.
Undertake the activity only at the approved organization and location and for the approved period.
Differences between schools and cities
A school may organize medical examinations, appointments, and document reviews centrally, or require students to handle them independently. Accommodation registration differs between campus housing and off-campus homes, while exit-entry appointment, fee, and supplementary-document procedures also vary by city.
Short-term exchanges, language programs, joint programs, and non-degree study do not necessarily follow the same route. Before accepting admission, ask the school about the visa category and whether it can support a study residence permit, so that you do not enter with a visa that does not match the program length.
Official basis and verification date
The purposes of X1 and X2 are based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa category guidance. The study residence documents, 30-day deadline, and internship endorsement are based on National Immigration Administration service guidance, verified through 2026-8-4. For actual processing, follow the current notices of the admitting school and the local public security exit-entry administration.
