How Foreigners Can Open a Bank Account in China

A personal bank account may be useful if you will be in China long term and need to receive a salary, make transfers, or connect to local services. You will need proof of identity, your purpose in China, your address, and tax-residency information; the branch will also verify your identity, intended use, and fraud risk.

Do you need a local bank account?

Short-term visitors can usually link an overseas bank card to a mobile payment service and may not need a Chinese bank account. A local account is more useful if you plan to work, study, or live in China long term and need to receive a salary in renminbi, pay rent, make local transfers, and manage everyday expenses over time. Opening an account is not an automatic right: the bank must verify your identity, customer information, purpose for opening the account, and risk profile.

  • Travel spending only: consider whether an overseas card and cash will meet your needs.

  • Receiving a salary in China: ask your employer whether it uses a designated bank or has arrangements for payroll cards.

  • Paying school fees or receiving a scholarship: ask the school about partner branches and supporting documents.

  • Business or company payments: a personal account cannot replace a compliant corporate account.

  • Receiving or transferring money for someone else: do not open an account for this purpose, and do not lend out your account.

Official principles and checks at the branch

The Ministry of Commerce's Guidelines for Foreign Businesspeople Working and Living in China (2025 Edition) states that foreigners may apply for a bank card at a commercial bank branch using valid identification, such as a valid passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. Applying does not mean the account will be approved on the spot; the bank will still review the documents in line with customer due diligence, intended account use, and risk-management requirements.

Banks, cities, and even different branches of the same bank may vary in their experience handling foreign passports. Different document requirements do not mean the checks can be bypassed. Start by asking your employer, school, or a larger branch near your place of residence that clearly serves foreign customers. Call ahead to confirm opening hours, whether an appointment is needed, and which documents to bring.

Documents to prepare before applying

  1. A valid passport and your current valid visa, stay permit, or residence permit.

  2. A mainland China mobile number that can receive text messages at the branch.

  3. Your actual residential address in China and documents that can verify it.

  4. Documents showing the purpose of the account, such as a work permit, employment contract, proof of employment, admission letter, or proof of enrollment.

  5. Details of your employer, school, or another contact, including a Chinese telephone number.

  6. Your country or region of tax residence, tax identification number, and related declaration information.

  7. A small amount of initial funding required to open the account and a payment method you can use yourself.

Do not prepare piles of irrelevant photocopies in pursuit of a supposedly universal document checklist. Confirm the requirements with the intended branch, then bring the originals and clear copies. If your passport name is long or contains spaces or multiple surnames, decide in advance on the spelling to be used for payroll, tax, mobile registration, and payment accounts. This helps prevent linking problems caused by inconsistent names later.

What happens at the branch

  1. When taking a queue number, state that you are applying with a foreign passport for a personal settlement account and explain its actual purpose.

  2. Submit your identification and supporting documents, and register your mobile number, address, and tax-residency information.

  3. Answer truthfully about your occupation, source of funds, expected transactions, and whether anyone else will control the account.

  4. Check the English name, document number, expiry date, and telephone number entered by the bank.

  5. Set the bank-card PIN and activate text alerts, mobile banking, and any transfer functions you need.

  6. Confirm the account type, daily limits, interbank transfer rules, overseas inward-remittance rules, and foreign-currency exchange rules.

  7. Test the login at the branch and save the bank's customer-service number and the branch details.

Some branches may require an internal review and may not be able to complete the process immediately. Do not let a stranger enter false employment, address, or tax information for you. Before signing, read the fees, information-sharing terms, and electronic-banking terms carefully; ask the staff to explain anything you do not understand.

Run a complete test as soon as the account is opened

Before leaving the branch, confirm that the card is recognized, you can sign in to mobile banking, and text messages arrive. Then use a small amount of money to test incoming and outgoing transfers and to link the account to the mobile payment services you normally use. Save the name registered by the bank, the name of the account-opening branch, and the account details exactly in the format the bank provides. Do not rewrite them when giving them to your employer.

  • Set sensible payment and transfer limits.

  • Enable transaction alerts and protect verification codes sent to your phone.

  • Make a note of the bank's procedure for changing the mobile number registered to the account.

  • Keep the account-opening documents, but do not expose your full card number or identification documents on a public cloud drive.

  • Check regularly for unfamiliar transactions; if you see anything unusual, contact the bank immediately to freeze the account.

If you are asked for more documents or cannot open an account

Ask the staff to specify what is missing, whether you may submit it later, and whether that branch is equipped to handle the application. Common obstacles include a short remaining period of stay in China, inability to explain a reasonable purpose, an address or mobile number that cannot be verified, a name that does not match other systems, or the need for further tax or anti-money-laundering review. Record the branch, date, and answer you received, then confirm it with the bank's official customer-service channel rather than arguing policy with the teller.

You may ask another suitable branch if all your documents and information are genuine and consistent, but do not fabricate an employment relationship, buy supporting documents, or use someone else's mobile number. Refuse any request to rent or buy your bank card or use it to create artificial transaction activity. Lending out your card, PIN, online banking access, or verification codes can lead to financial loss and legal risk.

Before changing passports, changing phones, or leaving China

Notify the bank promptly if your passport is renewed after expiry, your visa or residence status changes, your mobile number is deactivated, or your address or tax-residency status changes. Expired documents may affect counter services, online banking, or transfers. Before leaving China for an extended period, deal with automatic payments, the remaining balance, foreign exchange, and whether to keep the account. Confirm whether future document updates must be made in person.

Different compliance rules apply to salaries, scholarships, personal everyday payments, and business income. Cross-border inward remittances, foreign-currency purchases, and outward remittances usually require you to explain the nature of the funds and provide supporting documents. Having a bank card does not mean all funds can be transferred freely.

Official source and update note

The basis for foreigners applying to commercial banks for bank cards with valid identification comes from the Guidelines for Foreign Businesspeople Working and Living in China (2025 Edition), issued by the Ministry of Commerce and other departments. The information was checked through 2026/8/4. Banks verify applications in accordance with the law, and the required documents, account features, and limits may change. Confirm the current requirements with the intended bank's official customer service and the branch in writing before applying. This article does not guarantee that an account will be opened and does not provide methods for evading customer identity checks.
