How International Students Apply to Chinese Universities
Applications to Chinese universities must be checked separately by institution, degree level, language of instruction, and specific program. Use a program table to track nationality, education, grades, language, and other documents; scholarship applications are handled separately from university admission.
Your choice of program determines the application documents
Chinese universities do not use a single application form for all international students. The institution, degree level, major, and language of instruction affect eligibility, examinations, deadlines, and documents. Find the current admissions guide and program catalog published by the university's international student admissions office, confirm that the program actually admits international students, and then start preparing.
Bachelor's, master's, doctoral, or non-degree program.
Instruction in Chinese, English, or another language.
Year of entry, program length, and campus.
Self-funded study, government scholarship, or university scholarship.
Whether an entrance examination, interview, portfolio, or supervisor's acceptance is required.
Build a table that lets you compare programs
For every candidate program, put the official link, program name, language of instruction, tuition, deadline, language requirements, examinations, scholarships, and accommodation in one table. Similar program names do not mean that courses, academic requirements, or application portals are the same. If information on the university homepage, school or department page, and international student office conflicts, obtain written confirmation from admissions.
The 2026 international undergraduate guides from Zhejiang University and Peking University show that each institution independently sets application periods, age criteria, language rules, examinations, application fees, and document requirements. These guides can help you understand the process, but they are not standards for other universities.
Divide the documents into at least six groups
Identity and nationality: a valid ordinary passport and the nationality evidence required by the university.
Education and grades: diploma, expected-graduation certificate, and complete transcripts.
Language and examinations: HSK, English results, CSCA, or program-specific examinations.
Academic materials: personal statement, research proposal, recommendations, portfolio, or publications.
Health and conduct: medical examination, criminal-record certificate, or declarations.
Finances and scholarships: application fee, proof of funds, and scholarship application documents.
Status in China: current visa or residence document and entry-exit records.
Documents not in Chinese or English generally require a compliant translation, and some also require notarization, an apostille, or authentication. The university may set specific requirements for passport validity, photographs, file formats, and referee details. Follow the current guide for the target program.
For each document, record the issuing authority, issue date, whether translation and authentication are complete, and the expected completion date. When obtaining academic or criminal-record documents across borders, delivery often takes longer than filling in the online application. Start with the slowest item and allow time for couriers, supplementary submissions, and communication across time zones.
From opening an account to submission
Register in the university's official system using a personal email address that will remain active.
Enter your name, nationality, and document number exactly as shown in the passport.
Select the correct program, major, and funding category.
Upload complete, legible documents translated as required.
Pay the application fee and keep the receipt.
Check every item before submitting and confirm whether supplementary documents are accepted after the deadline.
Keep the application number and continue checking the system, email, and university notices.
Some universities do not accept routine supplementary documents after submission. Do not wait until the last day before the deadline to upload large files or pay. Application fees are generally non-refundable, and paying a third-party platform's service fee does not mean the university has received your application.
Additional nationality checks for applicants of Chinese descent
Applicants who were formerly Chinese citizens and later acquired foreign nationality, or whose parents included one or two Chinese citizens at the time of their birth, may have to submit documents required by the Ministry of Education concerning acquisition of nationality, cancellation of household registration, their parents' permanent residence abroad, and actual residence abroad during a specified period. The university will set the precise time window for the relevant entry year.
The final nationality determination involves China's Nationality Law and the conclusion of the public security authorities. Do not assume that a foreign passport necessarily establishes eligibility as an international student, and do not conceal former Chinese nationality or household registration. Give the university complete family and nationality information as early as possible.
Interview, conditional admission, and final admission
After the initial document review, the university may arrange a written examination, interview, school or department review, or supervisor confirmation. Conditional admission does not always equal final admission; some programs require advance tuition payment, a final diploma, or a further eligibility check within a specified period.
Verify that the interview invitation comes through an official university channel.
Prepare to explain your academic background, choice of program, and language ability.
Review every payment and supplementary-document condition in the conditional admission notice.
After final admission, download or receive the admission and study visa documents.
Bring the originals required for verification at registration.
Differences by institution and year
Requirements differ greatly among undergraduate, graduate, medical, arts, and Chinese-language programs. Some 2026 international undergraduate programs already require results from the China Scholastic Competency Assessment; the major determines the subjects and language. Other programs may use their own examination or may not require the same test.
Admissions policies, tuition, and scholarships change every year. Older guides can help you identify questions, but cannot replace the current admissions guide. A third-party application service also cannot replace your own checks of the program and the truthfulness of the documents.
