International Student Registration at a Chinese University: Dorms, Campus Accounts, and the First Week
International student registration involves more than collecting a campus card. During the first week, you need to complete accommodation registration, original-document checks, payments, insurance, a medical examination, visa and residence formalities, and course-system activation, while tracking university, dormitory, and city procedures separately.
The new-student handbook is your master checklist
Registration locations, dormitories, payment, insurance, and medical-examination arrangements vary by university. Once admitted, find the handbook and registration notice for new international students for the current academic year on the university's international student office website, then check the campus, dates, and contacts. Do not rely only on outdated procedures shared in unofficial group chats.

Prepare one registration folder before departure

Keep the originals in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage. The university may verify your graduation and language certificates again during registration; failure to provide required originals may affect enrollment. Store important files separately on a personal device and in secure cloud storage rather than only in an agent's account.
Accommodation registration on move-in day
If you live in a campus dormitory, the university or dormitory may help with accommodation registration. Hotels generally register guests, while off-campus tenants must follow the requirements of the local public security authority. Establish who is responsible, when it will be completed, and whether you can obtain proof of registration. Confirm the requirements again after moving.
Check the room, keys, access controls, and inventory.

Confirm the rules on visitors, access, electricity use, and checking out.
Save the dormitory reception and campus security phone numbers.
For off-campus housing, ask the landlord to provide the registration documents.
Follow this sequence for in-person registration
Have your passport and admission documents verified at the international student registration desk.
Submit or present original academic, language, and health documents.
Confirm payment of tuition, accommodation, and other charges.
Buy or verify the medical insurance required by the university.
Activate your student number, campus card, email, network access, and learning systems.
Obtain department, supervisor, or student adviser contacts and course-registration arrangements.
Collect the university letters required for a study residence permit.
Save a receipt or screenshot after completing each item. If you cannot sign in to a system, your name is spelled inconsistently, or a payment has not been credited, ask the responsible office to record the problem while you are there. Do not leave every issue to a single student volunteer.
As soon as you receive access to the learning system, check your program requirements, compulsory courses, course enrollment and add/drop deadlines, academic calendar, and examination weeks. Find out whether the library, laboratories, studios, or other facilities require separate training or authorization. Create a written record of timetable clashes, credit discrepancies, and supervisor-allocation problems before the add/drop window closes; adjustments are usually harder after the deadline.
City formalities still need attention in the first week
After campus registration, you still need to address the medical examination and study residence documents required for your visa category. Long-term students should pay attention to the 30-day deadline after entry. You may also arrange a Chinese mobile number, bank account, mobile payments, and local transport as needed, but these everyday services must not take priority over residence formalities.

Save the phone numbers for the international student office, departmental academic affairs office, dormitory reception, campus security, and insurance claims on your phone and on paper. For messages about payments, account reactivation, or scholarships, use the university website or an official email address to verify the payee. Do not transfer money to personal accounts shared in group chats or give an agent your SMS verification codes.
Full dormitories, late arrival, and missing documents
Admission does not guarantee a place in a campus dormitory. If you do not have a confirmed room, book temporary accommodation that can register you, then look for off-campus housing. If you will arrive late, obtain written approval from the university before the deadline; after a flight delay, update your expected arrival time immediately.
If you have not yet received an original diploma or language certificate, a payment is delayed, or your medical examination is not accepted, explain the situation directly to the responsible office and obtain a plan for submitting the missing material. Do not submit forged documents or use someone else's payment record. The university may cancel your registration or admission.
Differences between living on and off campus
Campus dormitories offer short commutes and centralized procedures, but may impose restrictions on access hours, visitors, cooking, and holiday opening. Off-campus housing offers more choice, but you must handle the lease, deposit, utilities, internet, and accommodation registration yourself. Either way, factor in the actual door-to-door commute and the university's holiday schedule for the academic year.
Universities use different learning, payment, and communication platforms. Learn the official systems before joining community groups. Treat only formal university channels as authoritative for course, payment, and visa notices.
